💌Travel Tips for Visiting Scotland: Accommodation

Hey Reader

The next step is to book your accommodation. This means you start to think about exactly what type of

the accommodation you want.

I think the key factor when deciding on accommodation is to determine the reason for your visit to Scotland. Is it a short city break? Long stay in the countryside? Road trip or hiking in the mountains? Is there a special occasion to celebrate? Whatever type of trip you are planning, there is something for everyone’s style and budget.

But I agree that when you visit Scotland for the first time, these choices can overwhelm you, especially when you do not know where to go. The type of accommodation should align with the purpose and nature of your trip to Scotland.

For a short city break, centrally located hotels or serviced apartments in cities like Edinburgh or Glasgow would be ideal, offering convenience and easy access to attractions. If you're planning a longer stay in the countryside, cozy bed and breakfasts, charming cottages, or even farm stays could provide an authentic rural experience while allowing you to immerse yourself in the local culture and stunning landscapes.

For those embarking on a road trip or hiking adventure, camping sites, bothies (simple shelters), or budget hostels along popular routes might be the most practical and budget-friendly options, allowing you to stay close to nature and enjoy the great outdoors.

And if you're celebrating a special occasion, splurging on a luxurious castle hotel or a boutique resort could add an extra touch of indulgence and make the trip even more memorable. It's also worth considering the time of year you'll be visiting, as certain accommodations may be more suitable for specific seasons. For instance, cozy cottages with fireplaces might be perfect for a winter getaway, while beachfront rentals could be ideal for a summer coastal escape.

As soon as you figure out your plans following my guide to planning your trip, it’s time to determine what you want from your holiday accommodation in Scotland.

A bit of luxury and pampering in a 4 or 5* hotel? Do you value your privacy? Romantic stay with your partner in a charming castle?

Do you have a car and parking will be needed? Are you bringing a pet? Or do you need a family-friendly hotel? Or perhaps you’re travelling with your mum who has difficulty walking and needs an accessible

room?

How far in advance should you book your accommodation?

I think booking accommodation in Scotland is one of the most overlooked tasks in planning a trip. People who come to Scotland often underestimate how busy we are and how limited the accommodation choices are. Especially on islands and in remote places in the Highlands, it is sometimes not possible to stay in 4 or 5-star hotels simply because there are not many available, or in some places, none at all.

Priority number one is to secure your accommodation as soon as possible. As mentioned previously, during major events like the Fringe Festival in Edinburgh (August) and Hogmanay (New Year), prices get very high, and availability is limited. Having worked for years in a destination management company, we always advise booking accommodation at least six months in advance to get the best value. Outside of peak season, there are rarely problems finding accommodation unless an event is happening nearby, like Up Helly Aa in Lerwick (Shetlands) or Hogmanay in Edinburgh.

Hi Reader Every year on February 14, millions of people celebrate the world's largest festival of love by exchanging boxes of chocolates, enjoying candle-lit meals, and expressing their affection through heartfelt notes. However, behind the romantic facade of Valentine's Day lies a mysterious and grisly tale of a beheading and body parts scattered across Europe. While Paris and Rome are often associated with romance, few people may think of Glasgow in the same way. However, it is interesting...
