💌Saint Valentine, Patron Saint of Lovers, Bee Keepers, Plague, and Epilepsy

Hi Reader

Every year on February 14, millions of people celebrate the world's largest festival of love by exchanging boxes of chocolates, enjoying candle-lit meals, and expressing their affection through heartfelt notes. However, behind the romantic facade of Valentine's Day lies a mysterious and grisly tale of a beheading and body parts scattered across Europe.

While Paris and Rome are often associated with romance, few people may think of Glasgow in the same way. However, it is interesting to note that Glasgow is one of several cities claiming to house some remains of St. Valentine. According to legends, his skull is said to be located in the Basilica Di Santa Maria in Rome, while other remains are said to be held in churches in Dublin, Prague, and Madrid.

The bones of the martyr arrived in this gritty Glasgow port city in the late 1870s. They were donated by a wealthy French Catholic family and now rest in an ornate reliquary, displayed behind glass in the friary's atrium entrance. This has turned the small church into an unexpected romantic pilgrimage destination for couples and an unconventional spot for proposals.

The bones are kept in a glass reliquary, adorned with the inscription 'Corpus Valentini Martyris,' which translates to 'The body of the martyred Saint Valentine.' The reliquary is displayed in a glass case within a side aisle of the Blessed John Duns Scotus church.

Every year on February 14th, the box is adorned with flowers to celebrate his life. A mass is held, where prayers are said for people in love and those seeking it. Some also come to renew their wedding vows.

Until next time,

Kate
